Build the data foundation before you add AI

AI features are only as reliable as the data behind them. Before adding a model, it pays to understand where your data lives, who owns it and how often it changes.

Start with an inventory

List the systems involved, the fields that matter and the people who can answer questions about them. Many project delays come from data that is hard to access, inconsistently defined or missing history.

Make pipelines testable

Treat data pipelines like application code. Version them, test them and monitor them. Simple checks for freshness, volume and schema changes catch most problems before they reach a model or a dashboard.

Document shared definitions

Agree on what terms like “active customer” or “resolved ticket” mean, and record those definitions where analysts and engineers can find them. Shared language makes AI outputs easier to explain and to trust.

A solid foundation makes every later AI step cheaper, faster and easier to govern.
